The Hyperscript "Semiconductors" is the first Hyperscript of
AMAT that was conceived
before the actual lecture course took place. Originally, the lecture course was
scheduled for the fall term of 99, just in time for the first students of the
new "Master of Materials Science and
Engineering" study program of the Technical Faculty of theUniversity of Kiel. |
Health problems and unexpected difficulties in preparing the lecture course
made it advisable to postpone everything for a year. |
Moreover, in retrospect it proved to be much better to offer this lecture
in the third term of the Master study program instead of in the first term as
originally intended. Not because the subject is so difficult, but because too
much time would be needed to deal with the necessary (or at least useful)
background knowledge in solid state physics which meanwhile has been supplied.
The "unexpected difficulties" referred to above are
closely connected to the intendend scope ot the lecture, which seems to be so
special - or better: so general - that no adequate book could be found. |
The scope of the lecture is simple but not without ambition:
Use Si and main-stream Si microelectronic technology as a reference, and,
relative to this reference, cover all major semiconductors and discuss: |
Specific material and device
properties |
This should be more than just magnitude and type of the
bandgap. It could include for example: |
Mobilities, Defect and Doping levels in the bandgap. |
Specific theories (e.g. basic Laser theory) |
Material production |
Crystal growth methods, especially where different from Si |
Thin film technologies if important |
Special issues, e.g. crystal defects and passivation, environmenetal and
health hazards |
Specific products and
technologies |
Deals with the correlation properties- products and with |
Special technologies not covered by Si standards. |
Current Issues |
What are the problems, the focus of present research and developments? |
What are interesting research questions - not necessarily linked to
products? |
